Happy 25th Birthday World Wide Web!

Did you know that the world’s first website went live 25 years ago?

And because of that, I’d like to give a big thank you to Tim Berners-Lee–the genius behind the creation of the Web!

In fact, and you may not believe this, without his genius I’d have been playing music. Yes, that’s right, I’d have been a music teacher.

Exciting? Possibly… but, I’d rather have the satisfaction of owning my IT consulting firm.

Many other companies, owners, staff and shareholders owe their fate to a great idea which fundamentally has changed the lives of future generations.

Now, here’s something interesting that you may not have known.

Most people don’t know the difference between the Internet and the web.

Do you?

…

It’s quite simple really.

The Internet is a collection of servers that are connected together for form a huge network. A web, is a collection of web pages hosted on a server or collection of servers. The Internet is made of millions of web pages.

So, with that distinction out of the way, have you been to the first website in the world?

The website explains the basic features of the–and this is a mouthful–the “wide-area information retrieval initiative aiming to give universal access to a large universe of documents.”‘

Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?

Today, websites are used to promote companies products and services and they have been used to create an e-commerce ecosystem that has changed how consumers spend their money

So, from the perspective of the contact centre, how do I see the web evolving?

I see the web further evolving to front end the contact centre by bringing together other technologies such as chat and CRM.

As Omni-Channel practice continues to develop the web will no long stand on its own. Rather, it will evolve into a suite of information applications working seamlessly together in order to provide the user with an exceptional integrated experience.

So what does the next 25 years hold for the web?

Well, considering how much change that has occurred in the last 25 years alone, I think it’s safe to say this…

It’s unpredictable and exciting.

What do you think? Let me know by leaving a comment.

P.S.– I almost forgot, here’s the link to the world’s first website: http://info.cern.ch/
